I prefer My Heritage to other family…

I prefer My Heritage to other family history sites I have as they are good at support if you hit a problem and their 'hints' tend to be 99% accurate but obviously check them carefully first before adding to your tree. One thing I would like to see is as would be in a UK company they would tie in with others companies doing the same thing so you could move your tree complete with all photos and attachments, notes etc rather than just the bare bones of a tree. This would encourage free trade and a choice of provider rather than sustain multiple trees as each provider has their unique features.

Very disappointed with the fraudulent*…

Very disappointed with the fraudulent* charge to my card for an annual subscription that I did not order. I do not use the word 'fraudulent' lightly.

Here's why I make that statement:

1. You place an order for a DNA kit.
2. They add 'free trial' subscription to the shopping cart.
3. There is an option to uncheck the box if you don't want the 'free trial' subscription.
4. In my case I unchecked the box and removed it from the shopping cart, so I specifically did not order the free trial subscription. (I have the screen shots to prove this).
5. They set you up with a free trial anyway (I did not find this out until later).
6. One month later they charge you $149.
7. I phoned and asked them to refund the payment because I did not order the subscription. They refused because (in their words) I had ordered the free trial and had failed to cancel it before the renewal date so no refund is due.

This is an untrue representation and, frankly, they are being dishonest about how their ordering process works. I unequivocally did not order the 'free trial' subscription. For this reason I am feeling scammed.

I'm expecting to get a stock response below from My Heritage to say they inform you of all charges and you can cancel your subscription before it is renewed etc.... but any reasonable person can see this is just a deflection tactic.

If a customer explicitly states they do not want to buy a service, My Heritage should not have the right to ignore that instruction and still apply a 'free trial' and subsequently take payment for the continuation of that subscription. Why? because they are taking a payment without the explicit consent of the customer.

* Fraudulent definition "Dishonestly making a false (untrue or misleading) representation with a view to gain or with intent to cause loss."

Bad experience.

I tried the 14 days free trial. I didn’t receive an email to say it was ending then before I knew it I was charged was a years subscription. I’ve tried contacting them asking for a refund. I received an email asking for my mobile number. But I just need a refund. I’m currently unemployed due to Ill health and money is very tight. I’ve asked PayPal to step in for me and am waiting to hear back from them.

Bad experience

On September 10, I bought two DNA kits with fast shipping. Shipment never happened. I contacted the support team and they said there was a problem with the shipment and they offered to resend another 2 DNA kits. These kits were never shipped either. They finally gave me my money back. If they can't handle a simple shipment, I can't trust this company to do a DNA test.

I was very disappointed with the results I was getting from my free trial I decided to cancel before the due date following the correct instructions. However the full amount has been taken from my account and despite numerous attempts requesting a refund I am still waiting. The website does state that they offer a 30 day money back guarantee if not satisfied.

Easy Solution

Angie Michelle listened carefully and was able to quickly show me the solution to my "problem" - a minor inconvenience with the consistency checker. Great Service!

Would like full refund back! Got charged twice - lack of accountability

Partner and I ordered a couple of DNA tests for ourselves and were charged twice for a subscription that we did not approve of (almost $200aud). No emails or notifications were received to even warn of an ending free trial period. And when we had a look into our account there was no option to opt out or cancel the subscription. We left an enquiry only to be informed that nothing can be done and were only offered about 50% refund after a few calls. After looking online to see that several others have experienced the same thing and had money taken out without permission, we're honestly truly disappointed that this is the norm apparently. My partner and I are both students so $200 isn't a small amount. Just hope this is a legitimate service with some admin issues, and not some scam. Highly recommend the company look into it before more people go through the same thing.

As for myself and my partner, we would like to receive a full refund if any way possible. We can't afford the extra charge and wouldn't use the service after our test results came back anyway. If anyone could contact us, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Q:

How does it compare to Ancestry?

A:

In New Zealand Ancestry is free on all public Library's

by Anne Gilbert - December 15, 2018

A:

Yancestry is where i do all my research as that is the best site i have found. However, if you are like me where my great grandparents took on totally new names when they arrived at ellis island, and you dont know their names from the old country, then even ancestry wont help you trace them back there. However, through other peoples trees you might have luck. I signed up to my heritage because they had a special. It cane out to about $76 fir the whole year. But, all this lets you do is add more names on to your tree. Cant search any recirds. If you want to search, then you gotta get the data plan on top of that and these hidden things cost extra money. Sneaky. But i wanted to be able to make a family book that they offer, download it as a pdf change it to a ong file and import it to my blurb booksmart book on line. Blurb makes excellent books. The my heritage makes an excellent family book explaining how everone in your tree is related to you.

Hi Madeline, I was led to believe that Ancestry concentrated more on South African ancestors, so I chose MyHeritage - I am absolutely comfortable with the latter. Ron.

Q:

What does "Direct Ancestor" imply?

A:

When the term ancestor is used correctly, there is no such thing as an "indirect" ancestor. For example, your grandfather's brother is not your ancestor based solely on that relationship.

by Ruben774 - April 16, 2019

A:

Direct-line ancestor is someone from whom you descend in a direct line, parent to child, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc.

by Julio Mendoza - May 20, 2016

A:

I believe a direct ancestor is someone without whom you would not be here. All your other ancestors are indirect.

Q:

After several years and several computer upgrades the family tree builder software on my Windows 10 desktop has started crashing after a few minutes operation, and not saving changes. Can I save my project and reload software?

A:

MyHeritage knows about the failure of their backup and restore functions. Their tech support confirms that you cannot backup your work from the program, only the website. BUT! You can NOT restore from either. So your backup is obviously useless. I have been pursuing the issue for almost 4 months, and they have only said 'we'll let you know'. This is a HUGE issue!

Hi Jonathan, Im shure there is a way! Call the Helpcenter from Myheritage they will help you! Gert

We love our Windows 7. I presume they're more familiar with the system that they can answer me with solutions. A manager stopped paying his dues which resulted in their "putting a veil" on his pages, where I had typed in all my family profiles, with lots of work on my part. I asked them if all my posted messages can be retrieved and transfer to another's website. They finally saved me from my anxiety about losing the whole work I previously did. I feel like a "winner" now because those pages were saved, thank God.

Q:

I really liked MyHeritage and features. Don't know whether to renew due to the negative reviews. Thoughts?

A:

BEWARE! The site 'Restore' function DOES NOT WORK. You can only make a backup, which, of course, without restoring, is useless. The tech department has known about this for months and they DO NOT intend to fix it. Why not? Because if they don't then the only way you can access all the work you've done is to buy a subscription. Think about this: I put in six weeks of work, and now I have to pay to access it. Please don't be an idiot sucker like I was!

by Grace166 - July 31, 2017

A:

They are happy to bill without providing any warning. When called, unlike any other company, they will not terminate membership they will only discount membership several times until you threaten to report them. Then suddenly they will refund your money. They are scam artists.

by Silva462 - July 10, 2017

A:

In my experience with them their support suck and they don't honor their own Terms of Service. I wouldn't wanna deal with them ever again.

Q:

What is '23and me'? It comes to my attention quite often whilst using My Heritage. Is it some kind of genealogy club? Rob.

A:

Probbably you should like to know what are additional charges - described on MyHeritage site: Help Center > Account and Subscriptions > Subscriptions Whats the difference between a FAMILY SITE SUBSCRIPTION and a DATA SUBSCRIPTION? A Family Site Subscription (Premium or PremiumPlus) entitles you to increased storage on your family site for people in the family tree, photos, videos and documents. A Data Subscription entitles you with the access to billions of historical records in all the collections in SuperSearch. You also get unlimited access to Record Matches, including confirming and rejecting matches, if you have a family tree on MyHeritage.com. In addition, you can save and extract information from historical records you find in SuperSearch or get with Record Matches directly to your family tree.

I believe it is a DNA testing site that you can link to any of the genealogy sites. There is a website for '23andme' if you'd like more detailed information. It is 23andme.com
