MyHeritage Q&A
Q:
How does it compare to Ancestry?
In New Zealand Ancestry is free on all public Library's

Yancestry is where i do all my research as that is the best site i have found. However, if you are like me where my great grandparents took on totally new names when they arrived at ellis island, and you dont know their names from the old country, then even ancestry wont help you trace them back there. However, through other peoples trees you might have luck. I signed up to my heritage because they had a special. It cane out to about $76 fir the whole year. But, all this lets you do is add more names on to your tree. Cant search any recirds. If you want to search, then you gotta get the data plan on top of that and these hidden things cost extra money. Sneaky. But i wanted to be able to make a family book that they offer, download it as a pdf change it to a ong file and import it to my blurb booksmart book on line. Blurb makes excellent books. The my heritage makes an excellent family book explaining how everone in your tree is related to you.

Hi Madeline, I was led to believe that Ancestry concentrated more on South African ancestors, so I chose MyHeritage - I am absolutely comfortable with the latter. Ron.

Q:
What does "Direct Ancestor" imply?
When the term ancestor is used correctly, there is no such thing as an "indirect" ancestor. For example, your grandfather's brother is not your ancestor based solely on that relationship.

Direct-line ancestor is someone from whom you descend in a direct line, parent to child, grandparent, great-grandparent, etc.

I believe a direct ancestor is someone without whom you would not be here. All your other ancestors are indirect.

Q:
After several years and several computer upgrades the family tree builder software on my Windows 10 desktop has started crashing after a few minutes operation, and not saving changes. Can I save my project and reload software?
MyHeritage knows about the failure of their backup and restore functions. Their tech support confirms that you cannot backup your work from the program, only the website. BUT! You can NOT restore from either. So your backup is obviously useless. I have been pursuing the issue for almost 4 months, and they have only said 'we'll let you know'. This is a HUGE issue!

We love our Windows 7. I presume they're more familiar with the system that they can answer me with solutions. A manager stopped paying his dues which resulted in their "putting a veil" on his pages, where I had typed in all my family profiles, with lots of work on my part. I asked them if all my posted messages can be retrieved and transfer to another's website. They finally saved me from my anxiety about losing the whole work I previously did. I feel like a "winner" now because those pages were saved, thank God.

Q:
I really liked MyHeritage and features. Don't know whether to renew due to the negative reviews. Thoughts?
BEWARE! The site 'Restore' function DOES NOT WORK. You can only make a backup, which, of course, without restoring, is useless. The tech department has known about this for months and they DO NOT intend to fix it. Why not? Because if they don't then the only way you can access all the work you've done is to buy a subscription. Think about this: I put in six weeks of work, and now I have to pay to access it. Please don't be an idiot sucker like I was!

They are happy to bill without providing any warning. When called, unlike any other company, they will not terminate membership they will only discount membership several times until you threaten to report them. Then suddenly they will refund your money. They are scam artists.

In my experience with them their support suck and they don't honor their own Terms of Service. I wouldn't wanna deal with them ever again.

Q:
What is '23and me'? It comes to my attention quite often whilst using My Heritage. Is it some kind of genealogy club? Rob.
Probbably you should like to know what are additional charges - described on MyHeritage site: Help Center > Account and Subscriptions > Subscriptions Whats the difference between a FAMILY SITE SUBSCRIPTION and a DATA SUBSCRIPTION? A Family Site Subscription (Premium or PremiumPlus) entitles you to increased storage on your family site for people in the family tree, photos, videos and documents. A Data Subscription entitles you with the access to billions of historical records in all the collections in SuperSearch. You also get unlimited access to Record Matches, including confirming and rejecting matches, if you have a family tree on MyHeritage.com. In addition, you can save and extract information from historical records you find in SuperSearch or get with Record Matches directly to your family tree.

I believe it is a DNA testing site that you can link to any of the genealogy sites. There is a website for '23andme' if you'd like more detailed information. It is 23andme.com
